communication. Through skilled communication
techniques, caring and empathy, nurses are able to focus
on patient needs and develop trustworthy relationships with
them. These therapeutic relationships enable nurses to ask
appropriate questions, assess patients accurately and
provide relevant interventions. Thus, empowering care that
aids in the development of therapeutic relationships and
patient safety is only possible by means of professional

What is the main idea of the sample body
paragraph?
24
Sample body paragraph
Effective communication is imperative to promote safe,
therapeutic person-centred care. Dempsey et al. (2009)
define person-centred care as collective collaboration
between nurses, patients and their families to accentuate
priorities, plan realistic goals of care and devise and
implement evidence-based interventions. They state that
patient involvement is central to the success of a person
centred model of care with patients’ values, cultural beliefs
and preferences framing the overall plan of care. With
regard to the case study, nurses caring for Mr. Singh could
comprehensively address his health requirements by
adopting a person-centred approach. They could forge a
health partnership with him to make him feel valued and an
integral part of the care process, thereby encouraging open
discussions about his health issues. 25
Sample body paragraph
(continued)
On assessment, when nurses identify that Mr. Singh is a
heavy smoker and follows unhealthy eating practices,
nurses could educate him about the significance of
following productive lifestyle practices. Providing advice
about the health risks of smoking and discussing sources
of support for smoke cessation such as the Quitline
telephone service, or the Quit Coach, an interactive site,
would prove vital to Mr. Singh. Moreover, encouraging Mr.
Singh to avoid fast food and teaching him to read food
labels, calculate nutrient requirements and consume a
balanced diet would help him maintain personal health.
26
Sample body paragraph
(continued)
In fact, standard two of the registered nurse standards for
practice outlines that nurses should establish therapeutic
professional relationships by communicating appropriately,
providing accurate information and engaging in practices
that advance patient-centred care (The Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia [NMBA], 2016). In accordance
with the NMBA standards, when caring for patients like Mr.
Singh, through professional communication, nurses could
focus on the individual needs of patients, educate them
about those needs and promote self-care. Therefore,
professional communication paves the way for the
implementation of safe, therapeutic, person-centred care.

Sample conclusion
This essay has demonstrated the significance of
professional communication in ensuring optimal patient
outcomes. Person-centred communication is a key attribute
that strengthens the therapeutic link between patients and
their families enabling the provision of safe, quality care. By
focusing on the specific needs of patients, nurses could
provide relevant advice about nutrition and advocate
healthy lifestyle practices that would enhance patients’
overall health and wellbeing. Hence, professional
communication is a dynamic tool that builds constructive
relationships and endorses safe, improved, responsive
nursing care. To manage the complex demands of current
healthcare environments, student nurses should be
encouraged to develop therapeutic communication skills.
