According to World Health Organization, (2006), “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (para. 2) Applying this definition to the general health of the Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered community means highlighting all the problems they go they go through, starting with social stigma, discrimination, physical assault, violence, and denial of human rights and ending with the consequences of these challenges namely depression, suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts, substance abuse and poor health seeking behavior. The difficult situations they go through take toll on their health, more so mental health.

According to CDC Fact Sheet (2010), gay men are at increased risk of getting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. (p. 2) Gay men are likely to smoke more than the general population, which predisposes them to getting other diseases such as heart disease, lung cancer and emphysema. Lesbians are at increased risk of cervical cancer. According to “King County” (2011), “due to negative past experiences and mistrust of the medical profession, they tend to visit healthcare providers less often.” (para. 3)Brennan et al. (2007) acknowledges that child sexual abuse and it is prevalence is associated with high risk sexual behaviors and HIV positive status in gay and bisexual men.

Though most of the other health needs of this group are just the same as for other heterosexual individuals, these particular concerns predispose them to poorer health. Suicide attempts and depression are mental illnesses which compromise the quality of life. Access to healthcare is limited for them, and the stigma delivers the killer blow. Most of them feel unsafe for they do not know what will come their way in future.
