Part 2: Research + Writing Assignment
Let’s turn our attention now to Covid-19 and, you guessed it, vaccines. This is a major research and writing
assignment so be sure to read over these instructions thoroughly. Note: you need two files on Canvas, plus
these instructions: “Covid Assignment” Word document (to put your responses; there’s also a rich text version
available) and “Citing Your Information in Science Writing”.
First, briefly look at the questions you will be answering for Part 2 and then scroll back up here.

I. Where to Look for Quality Information
For the questions and tasks in III, it is essential that you locate reputable and reliable information. You have
done a tutorial on this and should have a good idea of what is a reputable source and what is junk. Here are
suggestions for search engines that usually provide reputable information (you still have to be discerning,
however). The last two are commercial websites, so take that with a grain of salt.
 scholar.google.com
 www.sciencemag.org/collections/coronavirus?intcmp=ghd_cov
 academic.microsoft.com
 worldwidescience.org
 www.science.gov
II. How to Cite Your Information
Everything you need to know about citing factual information and information you use from your resources is in
the handout “Citing Your Information in Science Writing” on Canvas. Before you start your research,
READ this handout. If you do not cite your information or cite it correctly, you will lose up to half the points
possible on this assignment.
III. Questions to Research & Write On
Answer the questions below using the Word document provided on Canvas “Covid Assignment.” (You are
required to use this file!)
1. Find ten (10) reputable journal articles and/or web articles on any scientific aspect of Covid-19 (treatment,
data reporting, vaccine development, policies, etc.) and create an “annotated bibliography” for each. Not sure
what an annotated bibliography is? Check out: guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography (By the way,
section I above lists search engines and websites; use these to drill down to find journal and web articles.)
For each resource:
a) Give the full citation of the resource (MLA or APA – your choice). You do not need to use in-text citations for
your annotated bibliography.
b) Give a short description of what the paper or resource is about (7 to 9 sentences).
c) Why do you think it is reliable? (2 to 3 sentences). If you do not answer this question, you will not receive
credit.
d) Put the word count at end of description of each resource (after c; your word target for each resource is 200
to 250 words, and includes information from a, b, and c).
2. There are realistically two related options for eradicating Covid-19: developing a vaccine and effecting herd
immunity. What is involved in each? What progress have we made (or not made) on each approach? You must
answer this using at least 3 to 4 different sources. (300 – 350 words; put word count at end of 2). Include your
full citations of each paper or resource cited after #2.
3. Let’s say that in 18 months, a vaccine is available. Should we all be required to get the vaccine? In what
ways is vaccination different from other types of personal health decisions? If Governor Newsom appointed
you to write a policy on vaccination for Californians, what would that policy look like? While this is an opinion
question, you should show that your opinions are informed by referencing scholarly resources. (400 –
500 words; put word count at end of 3) Include your full citations of each paper or resource cited after #3.
Note: you can absolutely use sources from your annotated bibliography to answer #2 and #3!!!
IV. Checklist 
Did you use the Word document “Covid Assignment” provided on Canvas? (Do not alter
this file since the margins and font are set specifically to facilitate grading on-line!)
Do your responses to each question actually answer the question as asked?
Did you proofread to correct grammatical errors and typos at least two times? (The more
you read over and correct your writing, the better it will be. There are no shortcuts here.)
Did you paraphrase carefully to avoid plagiarism? Does your writing contain any quotes
that shouldn’t be there? (i.e. information you use from sources must be paraphrased and
cited).
Did you cite your sources for ALL factual information and information attributed to other
authors?
Did you include word counts at the end of each question? Are your word counts
appropriate for the word limits?
If you have answered “yes” to all of these, you are ready to go to Step V.
V. Submission Information
Upload your responses to Part 2 to Canvas under Assignments > Covid Research. (You will not upload or turn
in Part 1 – this is for your use to study for the quiz.) Be aware that your submission will go through
Turnitin.com (plagiarism detection). Do your own work. Do not plagiarize your sources!
