CASE STUDY: Gayndah Heritage Railway Rail Trail
Gayndah is the oldest town in Queensland located on Highway 17 which is two hours from the coastal cities of Bundaberg and Maryborough. It is the heart of Queensland’s citrus country. It offers an authentic country experience with a variety of relaxing and interesting attractions. The town has well preserved colonial buildings. It also has a railway station which was closed permanently on September 20, 2013.
To preserve the history of the Gayndah District Railway, a group of locals formed a non-profit organisation which is called The Gayndah Heritage Railway Rail Trail. This group is committed to transforming the oldest town of Queensland into a promising, family friendly tourist destination. The group plans to offer different forms of tourism such as art, adventure, agriculture, cuisine and sport. They have acquired the Sunlander carriages from Queensland Rail which will become part of their static display. Rail Trail adventure is also one of the products they plan to develop.
