DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Students should design a Research Proposal on a
hypothetical research topic including human participants on an area of their
interest in the fields of Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Literary Studies or
Translation Studies.
 
The Research Design Proposal provides
students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have
acquired via the Introduction to
Research Practice
Unit for the preparation of an actual Research Design
Proposal which can be linked in the future to their BA Dissertation.
 
The following outline should be used taking into
consideration the nature of the proposed study (quantitative / qualitative).

Each section should be analysed accordingly based on
its importance. Students’ work should be balanced and all arguments should be
supported by expert knowledge. All proposals must include a complete
reference list of the sources cited in the proposal.
 
Together with the Research Design Proposal, students
should also submit an Ethics
Application Form, a Consent Form and an Information Sheet for the project they have proposed.
 
The Research Design Proposal
should not exceed 1,500-1,800 words in total (excluding the References list,
the Ethics application Form, the Consent Form and the Information Sheet).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The Research
Design Proposal will
be assessed based on the following criteria: 
 
Formulating a research question relevant to the
field of studies; Clarity of the motivation and the research proposal
focus; Ability to construct a short literature review
related to the research question; Discussion of the methodological approach followed; Ability to describe how the research objectives are
met with the methodology followed; § Awareness of the
ethical issues raised; Speculation on research implications; Task fulfillment: relevance, depth and range of
analysis; Organisation and structure; Evaluation and synthesis of ideas; Use of sources and referencing; Use of English;
Overall presentation.
