Opinion Essay Assignment Sheet

(3 to 5 pages)

Write a 3-5 pages essay on a topic of your choice that you have an established opinion about. The topic needs to have controversial issue/s and the essay should clearly show where you stand on the debate.

Your essay should be containing a clear introduction with a clear thesis statement, coherent body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Adherence to the topic, organization, clarity of expression, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word choice all count.

Purpose:

The purpose of this essay is to convince your audience to agree with your point of view on an issue. It is to primarily contact the minds of your audience, to get them to agree with you and to truly moving people to act.

Audience:

Your audience is your choice–but it must be an audience that does need to be convinced of whatever stand you take. If they all already agree with you, there’s not much point in making an argument in the first place. Below is some of the things that you may need to know about your audience:

how much they already know about your subject
if they already have preconceptions about your subject
they should have some stake in the issue (or you should be able to convince them of this)
their general beliefs and values
demographic information, such as income, age, education, race/gender (if applicable), political leanings, etc.
their potential reactions to your claim

Focus:

The focus of the essay should be your stand and why it’s the right one. The essay should be focused on a clear thesis, several clear reasons, and evidence for each reason–all determined by the needs of your audience. All of this, too, should be clearly set up within the paragraphs of your essay, and the connections continually explained throughout so your reader knows how everything fits together.

Development:

The core purpose of this essay is to help the readers understand your point of view. You aren’t simply writing to impress people, or toot your own horn. The purpose of writing always is to communicate with others. When you do so, the language chosen is deliberate given the audience (i.e., you don’t use technical language to communicate with the general public and you don’t come across as condescending when the subject is serious!). Sometimes young writers mistake this as an invitation to engage in slang or profanity. You should be cautioned with the old proverb that, “Profanity is the mark of a lazy mind!” Remember that words are power, and you want to choose language that works for you and helps to tell the story, language that you would not be ashamed to be associated with no matter the setting or listeners (in this case, readers!). Be engaging and entertaining where possible, invite the readers to join in this discussion with you.

The assignment doesn’t require you to use sources. However if you believe that it strengthens your argument you can do so. If you decide to use external sources, use sources specific and relevant and ones that your audience would find credible. It is very important to remember that your essay needs to include counter arguments and refutation.

Coherence:

The essay needs a very clear logical progression between reasons. It should flow smoothly as it moves from your basic statement of point-of-view to your audience. We also determined that doing this will mean that you need an excellent understanding of your own point of view. You need to avoid things like confusing structure, abstract evidence, logical errors, lack of evidence to demonstrate your points, writing over (or under) the heads of your audience in terms of vocabulary, and stylistic or editing errors.
