RTI model differs from the discrepancy model of identifying a
learning disability.
In the video If an Elementary School is already implementing
RTI in academic subjects what is the best way for them to begin to
incorporate behavior interventions? Joe Wehby explained behavior
intervention. He explained the different steps that should be taken
when students are not responding to one tier. He mentioned checking
the progress for some students behavior while moving to more
in-depth steps for students who are non-responsive. RTI seems to
focus on data research tier model early invention. I notice in
the video Joe talked about what disciplinary the school had in
place before interaction with students behavior.
With the discrepancy model it seems to focus on the disability
over data collection and research. Also failure has to be present
for any actions to take place. This is a traditional approach while
RTI is a modern approach. Standard testing is a good example
because you can see if students fail before stepping in.
What are the strengths and needs of both models?
The discrepancy is easy to use and understand. Testing measures
students levels by comparing their results to their peers.
Dispcrancy model also can be good because it looks at how a whole
population is being affected instead of one individual. RTI engages
students educators mentors and parents have a more in-depth
data collection process do not wait to fail focus on student
instead of the problem itself.
What challenges exist in implementing the RTI model in
schools?
RTI cannot tell if there is a disability or if the student is
going through something else. There can also be a mix up which
means students with a learning disability might go unnoticed while
the student without it are believed to have a form of learning
disability. Can require extra times from the educators and might
not be used well.
