Write an essay (between 500 and 800 words) investigating your own social identity. Think of a moment in your life when your membership in a social group became significant based on other people’s perception of you. Describe this moment and use the following questions to guide your essay:

• How did your experience in this moment change or intensify your awareness of your social identity? Your essay can focus on one identity category or multiple identity categories– it’s up to you.
• What systems of privilege and oppression shape your social identity? Beyond the moment your essay describes, how do you benefit from or face disadvantage as a result of these systems?
• How does your social identity affect your values and priorities (what you care about) in life?

Your essay should include at least one reference to a course text (anything from Weeks 1 through 6).

Here’s an example of how you can make a reference to a course text:

As a person of color and second-generation immigrant, I grew up with the knowledge that the dominant Anglo-American culture didn’t value my Indian community beyond our participation in the American economy. Similar to Mikala in the film What Was Ours, I participated in activities like Indian dance and music as a way to resist assimilation and carry my ancestors’ values and traditions into the future.

Because course text citations are common to all of us in the class, you don’t need to include a citation beyond naming the text (title and author/speaker) in the body of your essay like I’ve done above.

You should type your essay in a simple 12-point font (Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri Body are best), double-space your essay, number your pages (top right-hand corner), and use 1-inch margins.
